Understanding EPF in India
Editorially reviewed 12 July 2026 · Rules and assumptions can change
EPF contribution is not simply 24% of salary
Employee and employer contributions follow statutory wage definitions, ceilings, scheme membership and establishment practice. Part of the employer contribution may go to EPS rather than EPF, so adding 12% plus 12% to the EPF balance can overstate accumulation. This calculator is an illustration and its contribution split should be checked against the payslip and EPFO passbook.
Basic plus eligible DA, voluntary PF, job changes and exempted trusts can change the path. Reconcile the opening balance before projecting.
How EPF interest is credited
The annual rate is declared for the relevant year and applied under scheme rules to running balances; it is not guaranteed until retirement. Contributions and withdrawals occur through the year, while credit may appear later in the passbook. A constant 8.25% assumption is therefore a scenario, not a promise.
For a worker with ₹5 lakh already accumulated, future value depends heavily on salary growth, contribution wage and uninterrupted service. Run flat-salary and lower-rate cases.
Transfers, withdrawals and tax
Changing jobs should normally trigger UAN-linked transfer or account consolidation rather than casual withdrawal. Withdrawal eligibility, taxable treatment, TDS and continuous-service rules are fact-specific. Interest on certain employee contributions can also have separate tax treatment above applicable thresholds.
Use official EPFO services and verify KYC, nomination and service history. An old unresolved member ID can impair the accuracy of the retirement estimate.
EPF planning checklist
Compare payslip employee deduction, employer EPF/EPS split and passbook credits. Confirm UAN, KYC, nominee, date of joining and retirement age.
Do not count EPS as an EPF lump sum. Recalculate after salary or job changes and obtain official balance records; this tool does not replicate EPFO’s exact monthly method.

EPF calculator FAQs
Does the full employer 12% enter EPF?
Not always. A portion can be allocated to EPS subject to applicable rules.
Is today’s EPF rate fixed until retirement?
No. The rate is declared for relevant periods.
Should I withdraw EPF when changing jobs?
Transfer and continuity can be preferable; verify eligibility and tax effects before withdrawing.
Why does the passbook differ from the calculator?
Actual wage, EPS split, timing, withdrawals, declared rates and EPFO calculation rules differ from a simplified projection.
Is EPS part of displayed EPF corpus?
EPS is a separate pension scheme component and should not automatically be treated as withdrawable EPF balance.
