Understanding SCSS in India
Editorially reviewed 12 July 2026 · Rules and assumptions can change
SCSS is an income product, not a growth account
The Senior Citizens Savings Scheme accepts an eligible lump-sum deposit and pays interest quarterly. The principal is ordinarily returned at maturity; quarterly interest does not automatically compound inside the account. This calculator therefore shows the periodic cash flow and total interest separately. A maturity illustration that reinvested every quarterly payment at the SCSS rate would overstate what the scheme itself delivers.
The rate attached to a deposit follows the applicable issue terms, while new deposits or extensions may be subject to the rate and rules then in force. Eligibility depends on age and specified retirement circumstances, which a numerical calculator cannot establish.
Worked quarterly-income example
At an illustrative 8.2%, a ₹30 lakh SCSS deposit produces ₹2.46 lakh of annual interest, or ₹61,500 each quarter before tax. The principal remains ₹30 lakh rather than growing to principal plus all interest. If the retiree spends the quarterly payment, total wealth does not compound. If the retiree reinvests ₹61,500 elsewhere, the return and liquidity of that separate destination determine the eventual corpus.
Budgeting should align the quarterly receipt with monthly spending. Dividing ₹61,500 by three suggests ₹20,500 per month, but actual cash arrives quarterly. Maintain a transaction-account buffer so monthly bills are not dependent on the exact credit date.
Tax, TDS and the real spendable income
SCSS interest is taxable according to the holder’s circumstances. TDS may apply when statutory conditions and thresholds are met, but TDS is not the final tax. Form 15H or other declarations are available only when legal conditions are satisfied. The calculator shows gross income; retirees should estimate net income after tax and reconcile it with Form 26AS or the applicable information statement.
An eligible deposit may qualify within the applicable section 80C limit under the old regime, but this does not make the quarterly interest exempt. A retiree who compares SCSS with a tax-free assumption will overstate spendable income.
Deposit limits, maturity and early closure
The calculator enforces the current maximum deposit assumption used by the product page. Actual eligibility, permitted source of retirement proceeds, time limits for certain retirees and aggregate holdings across accounts must be checked. Splitting money across accounts does not bypass an aggregate statutory ceiling.
SCSS has a five-year term with extension provisions under the applicable rules. Premature closure is possible but may reduce interest or principal through prescribed deductions depending on timing. Keep medical and emergency liquidity outside SCSS so early closure is not the default response to an unexpected expense.
SCSS versus MIS, FD and an annuity
SCSS pays quarterly and is restricted to eligible investors. Post Office MIS pays monthly under its own limits. Bank FDs can offer monthly or quarterly payouts but add bank credit exposure and deposit-insurance considerations. An immediate annuity can pay for life but may sacrifice liquidity and leave a different estate depending on the option selected.
Compare net cash flow, payout frequency, access to principal, longevity protection and taxation. A retirement plan may combine products: SCSS for a defined five-year income bucket, liquid deposits for emergencies and an annuity or market-linked portfolio for longer horizons.
SCSS retirement-income checklist
Verify eligibility documents, aggregate deposits, nominee, quarterly credit account, maturity date, extension deadline and tax declaration status. Build a month-by-month cash-flow plan rather than treating annual interest as if it arrived evenly.
Recalculate net income when tax status or the interest rate for a new deposit changes. Do not spend principal merely because quarterly income is insufficient; first revisit expenses, other pension sources and the sustainability of the full retirement corpus.

SCSS calculator FAQs
Does SCSS interest compound automatically?
No. Interest is paid quarterly. Compounding occurs only if the investor separately reinvests those payments.
How much quarterly income does ₹30 lakh earn at 8.2%?
The gross estimate is ₹61,500 per quarter, before tax and subject to the official account terms.
Is SCSS interest tax-free?
No. Interest is generally taxable, and TDS rules may apply. TDS and final tax liability are not the same.
Can an SCSS account be closed early?
Premature closure is permitted under prescribed rules and can involve deductions depending on timing.
Is SCSS the same as an annuity?
No. SCSS returns principal at maturity and pays scheme interest; an annuity is an insurance contract whose payout and estate treatment depend on the selected option.
