Understanding SWP in India
Editorially reviewed 12 July 2026 · Rules and assumptions can change
SWP is redemption, not interest
A systematic withdrawal plan sells enough mutual-fund units to pay a chosen amount periodically. The payment can contain original capital and gain; it is not a guaranteed interest coupon. This calculator grows the remaining corpus at a smooth monthly rate and then deducts the withdrawal, while real NAV movements make the number of units sold vary.
If withdrawal plus tax and costs exceeds sustainable portfolio growth, the corpus declines. Even when the assumed average return exceeds the withdrawal rate, poor returns early in retirement can permanently impair longevity—sequence-of-returns risk.
Corpus-longevity example
₹50 lakh supporting ₹40,000 a month starts with a 9.6% annual withdrawal relative to opening corpus before tax. That is much more demanding than ₹20,000 a month, irrespective of an 8% expected return. Run 4%, 6% and 8%, plus an early market-fall scenario, rather than assuming every month earns 8%/12.
Increase withdrawals with inflation if they represent living costs; a flat ₹40,000 loses purchasing power. The calculator’s constant withdrawal is useful for arithmetic but can understate future needs.
SWP tax treatment
Tax applies to the gain portion of units redeemed, not automatically to the full bank credit. Each lot’s holding period and the scheme’s tax category determine the applicable capital-gains rule. FIFO and multiple purchase dates can make one withdrawal contain units with different histories.
Exit load can also apply to recent units. Build a cash bucket for near-term spending so that a market decline does not force large equity redemptions, and obtain a capital-gains statement for return filing.
Designing retirement withdrawals
Separate essential and discretionary spending, pension income and one-off healthcare or home costs. Hold near-term needs in suitable liquid assets, keep longer-term growth assets diversified and rebalance deliberately. A single fund and one assumed return are not a retirement-income plan.
Review at least annually and after large market moves. A temporary reduction in discretionary withdrawals can protect longevity more effectively than assuming a higher return.
SWP implementation checks
Confirm frequency, date, minimum balance, exit load, bank mandate, nominee and tax category. Check whether the amount is fixed or needs periodic inflation increases and how failed redemptions are handled.
The output excludes daily NAV variation, tax, loads and irregular expenses. Treat the exhaustion date as a scenario, not a promise that the corpus will last until then.

SWP calculator FAQs
Is the full SWP receipt taxable?
Normally tax is computed on the realised gain in redeemed units, subject to scheme category and current law.
Is SWP guaranteed monthly income?
The instruction may be scheduled, but the fund value and corpus longevity are not guaranteed.
Why can a corpus fail despite a good average return?
Early losses force more units to be sold and leave less capital to recover; this is sequence risk.
Should withdrawals rise with inflation?
If they fund living costs, modelling inflation is important; a flat nominal amount buys less over time.
Can SWP replace an emergency reserve?
No. Keep near-term emergency and spending money separate from volatile assets.
