Understanding XIRR in India

Editorially reviewed 12 July 2026 · Rules and assumptions can change

Why XIRR is needed

XIRR is the annual discount rate that makes the net present value of dated cash flows equal to zero. It handles SIPs, redemptions and irregular additions because every amount carries its actual date. Contributions are normally negative cash flows from the investor and the current or redemption value is positive.

This page is explicitly an estimator using average monthly investment; a production-grade XIRR requires every dated cash flow. Do not treat an estimated result as the folio’s tax or performance statement.

Cash-flow example

If ₹1 lakh is invested today, ₹50,000 six months later and the portfolio is ₹1.8 lakh after one year, CAGR cannot assign the second contribution correctly. XIRR discounts the two outflows for different lengths of time and solves iteratively for one money-weighted rate.

Entering the wrong sign, omitting a redemption or using statement dates instead of transaction dates can materially change the answer. The final portfolio value must be dated on the valuation date.

XIRR versus fund return

XIRR is investor-specific and money-weighted: a large contribution before a decline weighs heavily. A fund’s published time-weighted return isolates scheme performance from investor cash-flow timing. The two can differ without either being mathematically wrong.

Use XIRR to assess your experience and a suitable benchmark’s time-weighted return to assess the investment. Do not conclude that a fund underperformed solely because personal XIRR is lower.

Limits of the solved rate

Unusual cash-flow patterns can create multiple mathematical roots or fail to converge from a chosen guess. A short holding period can annualise a small gain into an eye-catching rate. XIRR also says nothing about volatility, risk, tax or whether the goal was achieved.

Validate with spreadsheet or portfolio-statement tools using exact dates. Inspect the absolute rupee gain and holding period beside the annualised percentage.

XIRR data checklist

Export all purchases, redemptions, switches, dividends and current value; use actual transaction dates and consistent signs. A switch is a redemption from one scheme and purchase into another, not a cash-flow-free event when measuring each scheme.

Reconcile totals to account statements and retain the valuation date. For tax, use capital-gains reports and statutory rules—XIRR is not taxable gain.

Common questions

XIRR calculator FAQs

Is XIRR the same as CAGR?

Only in a simple one-outflow, one-inflow case. XIRR is designed for dated irregular cash flows.

Why are investments entered as negative?

They are cash leaving the investor; redemptions and current value are cash coming back.

Is XIRR my taxable return?

No. Taxable gains use transaction-specific statutory calculations, not the portfolio discount rate.

Why can personal XIRR differ from fund returns?

Personal cash-flow timing and size affect money-weighted XIRR; published fund returns commonly use time-weighted methods.

Can XIRR fail to calculate?

Yes. Inconsistent signs, missing dates or complex cash flows may prevent a unique convergent solution.
