Understanding KVP in India

Editorially reviewed 12 July 2026 · Rules and assumptions can change

KVP’s doubling promise is rate-dependent mathematics

Kisan Vikas Patra is a cumulative small-savings certificate whose maturity period is set so that the invested amount doubles under the notified issue terms. At 7.5%, recent issues have used a 115-month maturity. The calculator also shows a logarithmic doubling estimate, but the official maturity period and amount on the certificate—not a rounded Rule of 72 result—govern the actual claim.

A new quarterly rate applies to new purchases according to the notification. Existing certificates follow their issue terms. Do not model a certificate purchased at one rate using a later headline rate.

Worked KVP example and effective annual return

A ₹5 lakh purchase that doubles becomes ₹10 lakh at the issue’s stated maturity, not exactly at ten calendar years unless the notified term says so. The implied return comes from the relationship between the two values and the exact number of months. ‘Double your money’ sounds more powerful than 7.5%, but both describe the same compounding path.

Inflation changes the interpretation. At 6% inflation, ₹10 lakh received roughly 9 years and 7 months later has purchasing power far below ₹10 lakh today. Use the Inflation Calculator before calling the doubled amount a doubled lifestyle benefit.

KVP taxation and cash-flow consequences

KVP interest is generally taxable and the purchase does not receive the same section 80C treatment as NSC merely because both are post-office certificates. Tax reporting can involve accrued or maturity interest according to the applicable law and accounting method. The calculator shows pre-tax maturity only.

Because KVP pays no regular income, tax and household expenses must be funded from other cash. Investors should retain purchase and maturity records so accrued income is not omitted or double-counted.

Liquidity, transfer and premature encashment

India Post’s published guidance permits premature encashment after the prescribed lock-in—commonly two years and six months for eligible current certificates—and in specified exceptional cases. The payout on early encashment follows the official table, not the smooth compound value shown in this calculator.

Certificates may be transferred under applicable procedures, but transferability does not make them as liquid as a bank account or traded security. Emergency money should remain elsewhere.

KVP versus NSC and bank FD

KVP emphasises a maturity multiple; NSC has a fixed five-year term and different tax-deduction characteristics; an FD offers chosen tenures and possible early closure. Sovereign backing, bank deposit insurance, tax, liquidity and reinvestment dates need to be compared alongside rates.

For a fixed-date goal, the most important difference may be maturity alignment. A certificate that doubles after the fee is due is not useful simply because the final value is larger.

KVP checklist

Verify the issue date, official maturity date, holder, nominee, certificate record and tax treatment. Use the calculator’s doubling time as an explanation, then replace it with the certificate’s stated term for the final plan.

Stress the goal for inflation and avoid using ‘doubling’ as a reason to overallocate to one product. Review how the maturity will be reinvested or spent before it arrives.

Common questions

KVP calculator FAQs

Does KVP always double in the same number of months?

No. The notified rate determines the official maturity period for each issue.

Is KVP tax-free?

No. Interest is generally taxable. The calculator displays a pre-tax maturity value.

Does KVP qualify for section 80C like NSC?

KVP does not automatically receive NSC’s deduction treatment. Check the applicable tax provisions for the relevant year.

Can KVP be encashed early?

Premature encashment follows specified timing and event rules, with proceeds determined by official tables.

Why is the exact maturity different from the Rule of 72?

The Rule of 72 is a shortcut. Official maturity uses the scheme’s notified rate, exact month count and prescribed terms.
