Understanding Car Loan in India

Editorially reviewed 12 July 2026 · Rules and assumptions can change

Finance the on-road cost, not ex-showroom price

On-road price includes taxes, registration, insurance and accessories. The calculator subtracts down payment and adds disclosed finance fees to reveal the funded cost. Dealer discounts on the car and mark-ups on finance or insurance should be evaluated separately.

A car depreciates while the loan amortises. A small down payment and long tenure can leave outstanding debt above resale value after an accident or early sale.

EMI plus ownership cost

Affordability includes fuel or charging, maintenance, insurance renewal, parking, tyres and repairs—not EMI alone. Compare the total mobility budget with alternatives. A ₹12 lakh loan at 9% for seven years costs far more interest than a five-year term despite the lower monthly figure.

Preserve cash for first-year running costs and avoid financing accessories that rapidly lose value unless necessary.

Dealer finance comparison

Obtain the lender’s KFS and compare APR, net disbursal, hypothecation charge, processing fee, bundled insurance, late fee and foreclosure terms. A cash discount may disappear when choosing outside finance; calculate the combined transaction rather than rate alone.

After repayment, obtain NOC and complete hypothecation removal with the transport authority and insurer. Until records change, title can remain encumbered.

Car-loan checklist

Enter actual on-road price and a down payment that leaves an emergency reserve. Stress the EMI alongside insurance renewal and maintenance, and avoid a tenure longer than intended ownership.

Verify lender identity, KFS, rate type, mandate, prepayment terms and hypothecation process. Keep payment and closure records.

Common questions

Car Loan calculator FAQs

Why use on-road price?

It captures registration, tax, insurance and other costs needed to put the vehicle on the road.

Can the loan exceed resale value?

Yes. Vehicles can depreciate faster than principal falls, especially with low down payment and long tenure.

Is dealer finance always cheaper?

No. Compare vehicle discount, APR, fees and insurance as one package.

Should loan tenure exceed planned ownership?

Usually avoid it; selling an encumbered car can require settling the outstanding loan.

What happens after final EMI?

Obtain NOC and complete hypothecation removal in registration and insurance records.
