Understanding Education Loan in India
Editorially reviewed 12 July 2026 · Rules and assumptions can change
Fund the full education budget
Course cost may include tuition, hostel, travel, equipment, deposits, insurance and currency movements for overseas study. Subtract confirmed scholarship and family contribution, not hoped-for aid. Disbursement may follow institution milestones rather than arrive as one lump sum.
Keep a contingency for fee inflation and visa or living costs that the lender excludes. Collateral, co-borrower and margin requirements depend on amount, institution, course and lender.
Moratorium interest is real debt
During study plus moratorium, interest can accrue even when EMI is deferred. If ₹20 lakh accrues at 10% for three years with no servicing, the repayment opening balance can rise materially. This calculator allows partial interest servicing so families can see how paying interest during study reduces later EMI and total cost.
Moratorium is not an interest holiday unless the sanction explicitly says so. Ask how interest is computed and capitalised, and when full repayment begins.
Employment and currency stress
Do not base repayment only on the best placement salary. Test delayed employment, lower take-home pay and overseas currency depreciation. For foreign study, course expenses and future salary may be in different currencies while the loan remains rupee-denominated.
Choose tenure that leaves room for relocation and living costs. Borrowing should be proportionate to realistic career outcomes, not only admission prestige.
Tax, subsidy and documentation
Interest may qualify for a deduction under applicable income-tax provisions subject to borrower, lender, purpose and period conditions; principal is not the same benefit. Government subsidy schemes have separate eligibility and documentation. Verify current law and scheme rules rather than assuming the calculator applies them.
Keep admission proof, fee schedule, sanction terms, disbursement records and interest certificates. Notify the lender of course or employment changes and understand collateral-release procedure.

Education Loan calculator FAQs
Is moratorium interest-free?
Usually not. Interest may accrue and be added to the balance unless serviced or subsidised under applicable terms.
Why does the EMI principal exceed the amount borrowed?
Unpaid moratorium interest may be capitalised before repayment.
Should scholarship be entered?
Only include confirmed scholarship or own contribution that genuinely reduces borrowing.
Does education-loan principal get a tax deduction?
Do not assume so; applicable provisions commonly focus on qualifying interest and have conditions.
What overseas risk should be tested?
Currency movements, delayed employment, visa changes and living costs outside sanctioned expenses.
