Understanding Loan Against Securities in India

Editorially reviewed 12 July 2026 · Rules and assumptions can change

A fluctuating borrowing base

A loan against securities creates a credit limit against eligible pledged investments. Interest is often charged on utilised amount, not the full sanctioned limit, but fees and minimum charges may apply. The calculator separates portfolio value, LTV, requested limit and expected utilisation.

Eligibility and haircut differ by instrument and lender. RBI guidance and lender policy can cap exposures; do not assume every share, bond or fund is accepted at the input LTV.

Margin-call stress test

A ₹25 lakh eligible portfolio at 50% LTV initially supports ₹12.5 lakh. If markets fall 20%, collateral becomes ₹20 lakh and permitted borrowing at unchanged LTV becomes ₹10 lakh. Utilisation above that can trigger a margin call, extra collateral, repayment or lender sale.

Forced sale during a fall can crystallise losses and tax. Keep utilisation well below the maximum and maintain unpledged liquidity.

Cost and portfolio consequences

Compare interest on expected daily utilisation, pledge and de-pledge charges, renewal, processing, default rate and liquidation terms. A revolving facility can be efficient for short mismatches but expensive when continuously utilised.

Pledged securities still carry market and issuer risk, and corporate actions or eligibility changes can alter collateral. Borrowing to buy more of the same volatile asset compounds downside.

LAS checklist

Obtain the eligible-security list, haircut, maintenance margin, notice method, cure period and liquidation waterfall. Stress 20%, 30% and 40% declines and confirm a repayment source independent of the portfolio.

Monitor utilisation and collateral frequently, protect contact details for alerts and understand de-pledge timing. The calculator cannot predict lender liquidation.
